DEATH TO THE SPIDER-SQUIDS
- Caleb throws a psychic dagger at SpSq5 for 7 psychic dmg and then again for 8 psychic dmg.
- SpSq1 skitters up behind Soliana and misses grabbing her with its tentacles. (Mage Armor for the win!)
- Niniel casts Fly on herself then summons a Tentacle next to Caleb and Soliana which slaps SpSq1 for 2 cold dmg.
- Soliana steps up to the railing of the ship casting Thunderwave on two of the SpSq's trying to climb the ship, but they withstand her spell pretty well, taking only 8 thunder dmg each. She then Starlight Steps 30' away from the melee.
- Zemma Rage transforms into her kitty claws form and then runs up to SpSq5 missing with her claws then slashing it for 10 slashing dmg then again for 8 slashing dmg.
- SpSq2 climbs up the side of the ship and then grabs Caleb in its tentacles for 11 (5 thanks to Niniel's Tentacle) bludgeoning dmg and Grappling him, then Caleb gets pulled toward its squid mouth where it bites him for 13 piercing dmg.
- SpSq3 climbs up the side of the ship starting to fight with its friend over Caleb, but misses.
- SpSq4 climbs up the side of the ship, Grapples Zemma in its tentacles 11 (5) bludgeoning then pulling her into its maw and missing biting her.
- Poetry summons Ember within 10' of SpSqs 2, 3, and 4, and they all take 9 fire dmg then Ember throws a Flame Seed at SpSq2 missing.
- SpSq5 Grapples Zemma fighting with its friend for 15 (7) bludgeoning dmg then bites her for 9 (4) piercing dmg.
- Caleb Readies throwing daggers at SpSq4 for when Soliana teleports him out of the mass of SpSqs.
- SpSq1 skitters after Soliana Grappling her for 20 bludgeoning dmg and then misses biting her.
- Niniel flies around to line herself up and then casts Lightning Bolt on the SpSqs 2-5 who are all in a convenient line. They takes 35 lightning dmg and Ember takes 17 lightning dmg as she dodges. Then she moves her Tentacle and wallops SpSq1 for 10 cold dmg.
- Soliana Starlight Steps out of the Grappling tentacles then Vortex Warps the waiting Caleb out of his Grapple who throws his psychic dagger at SpSq4 for 23 psychic dmg then hitting it again rapidly for another 6 psychic dmg, which kills SpSq4 and it falls back into the ocean. Soliana then side steps and hides behind the mast.
- Zemma claws SpSq5 for 8 slashing dmg which kills it and it falls off the side of the ocean, so she steps to the side and swipes SpSq3 for 7 slashing then again for 10 slashing dmg.
- SpSq2 misses grappling Caleb.
- SpSq3 Grapples Zemma bludgeoning her for 19 (9) dmg, but then she squirms away from its bite.
- Poetry casts Healing Word on Caleb for 4 HP then she misses with her Thorn Whip. Ember then steps away from SpSq3 and pelts it with a Flame Seed for 7 fire dmg. SpSq3 dies and falls off the side of the ship.
- Caleb runs behind the mast to disorient SpSq2 (Bonus Action Hide for 29 Stealth), and then he reappears as he darts in and STABS it right in the squid brain for 55 piercing dmg. (No kill like Overkill!)
- SpSq1 moves up 5' and then Grapples Caleb for 10 (2 thanks to Tentacle) bludgeoning dmg then bites Caleb for 20 piercing dmg.
- Niniel casts Eldritch Blast dealing some dmg.
- Soliana cries, "Bite it, Caleb!" and Polymorphs Caleb into a Giant Crocodile.
- Poetry casts Scorching Ray on SpSq1 hitting three times for a total of 22 fire dmg.
- CrocoCaleb bites SpSq1 and eats it. Fully eats it.
- Soliana immediately worries that if she drops the spell Caleb's stomach won't be able to handle the giant squid, but then he starts experimentally nipping at her skirts and the ship's railing, so she ends the spell and Caleb is Caleb again.
- He burps and it tastes quite gross, but other than that he's okay.
- Niniel cuts a bunch of the shark-like teeth out of the one SpSq who didn't fall off the boat or get eaten by a rogue.
- Soliana asks Caleb what it was like to be a crocodile, and he says he had the urge to eat everything, though he did kind of remember that he shouldn't eat his friends. Which was weird for him as a crocodile because that brain thought that they looked tasty.
- They ask Soliana when she learned how to do that, and she says that Grim teaches her spells when she Trances sometimes. In this Trance dream she got to fly around as a Giant Eagle, and then she rode a Caleb elephant.
- A sailor makes a lewd remark, and Caleb laughs so Soliana pronounces that "Boys are gross!" and huffs off to the cabins to hide from the uncomfortable situation. Stardust has just arrived and squawks very loudly at the offending sailor before following Soliana into the hold.
- The person in the crow's nest says they see someone on the island and maybe some critters?
- The decision is made to approach the island. Since they can't see what's underwater, Niniel takes a rope and dive in, and says she start yanking really hard if there's something that would damage the boat.
- She sees the "island" is buoyed up by inflated sacks, and there are chains and tubes extending down into the ocean. There's at least one tube that a human would fit into it.
- Niniel comes back up and report that there isn't anything that should hurt the ship, so they can get really close without risking the hull.
- They fetch the hiding Soliana and have Stardust do another closer loop.
- There's a low, sort of rounded building that melds down at the edge towards the edges of the "island".
- There are several doors, and there is a person wearing a cloak near one of the doors. They have two creatures that look like owlbears, but with squid for heads instead of owl faces. The tentacles are dancing around not just hanging. Think like an elephant's trunk waving around, but a bunch of them instead of only one.
- During the time it takes them to approach the built-island they have a break to prepare themselves and Poetry uses all her first level spell slots casts Cure Wounds on Caleb so he's back to full health.
- The Keepers get to the island, and the boat pulls back a few hundred feet.
- They approach the robed person holding a quarterstaff who is flanked by the squid-bears.
- Niniel leads the way and greets the person and introducing herself as "the emissary".
- The woman (it's a woman) pulls her hood back and she's a triton with wild hair. She asks if the emissary is here to do an inspection.
- Niniel gingerly pets one of the squid-bears.
- Thaneus apologizes for the spider-squids as she did not know that Niniel was on board.
- Niniel introduces her "entourage".
- A tour of the facility is given.
- The build is a flat dome sort of shape. It's like a warehouse with an industrial feel. There are a few other tritons who avoid the group as much as possible. Not sure if it's Niniel and her emissary status or if Thaneus is a boss with an iron fist that everyone is afraid of.
- There are tanks with living animals suspended in some sort of liquid and despite some of them having pieces missing they seem to alive.
- Niniel finds a large lobster and asks it to nod for yes and shakes side to side for no.
- Niniel asks if it's in pain and it bobs a bit. She tries to ask a no question, asking if its name is Frank, but it just doesn't move in response to that.
- Soliana asks why the crocidolphins attacked Port Carling. Thaneus doesn't know what they are sent to do after she creates the creatures. Someone else gives them their orders.
- Niniel expounds about how terrible land forests are.
- Thaneus asks the land-dwellers what terrifies them. Soliana offers up spiders and large things that could eat her in one chomp.
- Further conversation leads Thaneus to question whether Niniel is truly the emissary, and she confidently reaches her hand into her Patron Pouch and pulls out a piece of paper with more of the inscrutable writing which she allows Thaneus to read. She also shows Thaneus her golden conch shell bracelet and her obsidian kraken pin.
- Thaneus is mollified and the tour continues.
- Niniel questions one of the other workers and they are treated with respect, but they don't love being out of the water so much.
- Thaneus uses a combination of necromantic and evocation magics to graft the living creature limbs to the host creatures.
- Soliana will not be allowed to observe the grafting process.
- Niniel asks if there is a way to get the creatures not to attack their boat. Thaneus suggests maybe flying the empire's banner (purple field with a black Kraken with red eyes). Other than that, the ship's crew would have to convert to the Kraken's cause for it to be marked.
- Niniel requests and is given a small banner for them to use.
- They return to the boat and turn toward the Icy Expanse.
- Niniel writes another note to the Kraken in her book, and eagerly awaits the response, staring at the page expectantly. "Visited Lab #4. Thanks for the note proof. What does it say? I can't read it. Is that a me problem? Thaneus seems like a harsh mistress. Why are we attacking Port Carling?"
