22 Redfall 1374
- They group trudge into Port Carling around noon. It is less foggy now that the sun is higher in the sky.
- They head straight to Sir Foxglove's house.
- Sir Foxglove says the Crocodolphin attacks have been happening on and off.
- Foxglove says there's a new node forming in the vicinity of Lamara, but it's unusual in that it's a power sink instead of a source.
- He says there is also another amorphous anomaly forming near the Icy Expanse in the Irondeep ocean between here and Scaldras.
- He's not sure if the Storm Caller will be able to navigate there, but he would like them to check with Gringamore.
- Niniel and Poetry negotiate a fee for 500 GP each with half up front to get the cold weather gear they will need.
- Sir Foxglove recommends Agatha's Haberdashery for their sartorial needs.
- They do some shopping. Everyone gets good boots and winter gear in their preferred, but Poetry also gets some studded leather armor.
- From there they head to the docks, find the Storm Caller, where the crew is making repairs. Apparently they were attacked by piranha bears.
- Soliana offers to help with her Mending spell, and goes to find Orin Flemming, the ship's carpenter. She helps repair some cracks and scratches.
- Zemma was already up a mast with a hammer by the time they looked around for her.
- Niniel dives into the bay to have a chat with some of the local sea life. The fish confirm that strange creatures have been attacking things in the area for at least three or four days. He also says that there's been more current in the area as well as the tides seem to have been higher. But it's mostly just the weird creatures coming out of the depths. The last set came from that way (out into the ocean to the SW).
- The Icy Expanse is in the opposite direction to the SE.
- Captain Gringamore says that while he is not a fan of the Kolstad family, but he doesn't know of anything they are currently doing that would be pissing off some sort of sea protector.
- The boat repairs are going to take about another two days, so they have some time to do some things in town if they want.
- Niniel spends at least one day collecting seashells and if possible pearls and makes a big adjustable size bracelet or necklace, and she tucks it into her Patron Pouch with an apology shouted into it like she's breathing into a paper bag. A moment or two later she feels a weight hit the pouch and she pulls out a broach shaped like a kraken made of obsidian with two dark red gems eyes.
- Soliana casts Detect Magic and it has a subtle Enchantment magic to it, but Identify says it doesn't do anything yet. Soliana thinks it might be like a magic seed.
- Niniel almost immediately dives into the ocean to see if being underwater will help her "seed" grow. She also tries to cast Dancing Lights into it. She puts the purply-black fish scale she also got out of her pocket and puts them together. Nothing happens.
- Soliana waited patient and then ambushes her with questions. Niniel tells her that when she left Revelora she was given the pouch as a sort of communication tool, and she puts things in and gets things back out too.
- The weather keeps getting worse over the course of the next few days, and there's lot more fog and rough water. Gringamore says that while the weather is generally worse in the winter, but this is extreme.
- Soliana sends Stardust up to find the upper edge of the fog, which does end eventually, though it does extend quite high. The trouble is that up there the wind is really strong, and she has a hard time maintaining course.
- The fog does end out over the ocean, but it's a good ways out. Like five miles out. Soliana also checks, and the fog is not magical.
- The decision is made to head SW first to see if the semi-aquatic creatures and their origin is related to the arcane leaps.
- As the ship sets out, the chop is rough and the fog is dense, but it seems like it clears up a little ahead of the ship. Niniel runs to the back of the ship and sees they are in a kind of bubble.
- Many theories are made about what could be causing this situation. Is it two krakens beefing over territory? Is it an underwater war between two magically powerful entities or nations?
- 1,500 XP ea for 23,000 total ea.
